Junior Program Employment
The ATIS Junior Program offers hiking, backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, and other wilderness experiences in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Park to kids ranging from age 4 to 16. Most trips are day trips, with the exception of a two-week period at the end of June when the organization runs its High Peaks Camp and Leadership Camp.
The program hires counselors to lead the program's trips from approximately the middle of June until the end of August. Counselors typically range in age from 16 to 26. Experience working with children and hiking, canoeing, or otherwise spending time in the backcountry is preferred but not required; ATIS recognizes that good counselors come from a variety of backgrounds and bring different strengths to the staff.
To apply for a job in our Junior Program, please email Ben Runyon at [email protected] with a cover letter detailing your qualifications as a counselor and the reasons why you would like to become an ATIS counselor. Your cover letter should also include:
- Dates of availability for work--whole weeks only, and preferably in chunks, rather than sporadic and scattered weeks. Generally ATIS requires that counselors work at least four weeks over the course of the summer;
- Date of birth and/or age at the end of the upcoming summer;
- Level of schooling you will have completed at the end of the current school year (i.e., junior year of high school, freshman year of college, college graduate, etc.);
- Current medical certifications and other certifications relevant to work with ATIS. If you are planning on pursuing any certifications this coming year, please include that information, and plan to update us to confirm that you will indeed be obtaining those certifications.
If you would like to include a resume along with your cover letter, you are welcome to do so, but a resume is not required for this application.
Please send all applications for the 2025 season to Ben Runyon, ATIS Executive Director, by December 31, 2024. We anticipate making hiring decisions by the middle of March.
